Interim Conferences

Look at what we're learning this month!

In Reading, we will be working in Theme 1, "All About Me".  The letters for the month are: Ss, Mm, Rr, Nn, Tt, Pp, Aa, and Cc.  Words to be introduced are I, a, My/my, The/the and go.  Books to read include: "From Head to Toe" by Eric Carle, "Something Special" by David McPhail, "You and Me" by Giovanni Mana and "Kelly in the Mirror" by Martha Vertreace.  Skills to be learned include, print awareness (knowing the difference between a letter, a word, and a sentence), book covers (author, illustrator and title)  identifying the title page,  knowing where the story begins, making predictions based on pictures, retelling the story by pictures only, breaking words apart into syllables, counting how many syllables are in a word, matching print to speech (moving your finger along/ one word at a time), identify how many words are in a sentence, and how many letter are in a given word.  Children need to identify which pictures or object begin with the introduced sounds and give a word, they need to identify where the sound is heard.  Ex. Say the word sit, where do you hear the /s/? Answer: at the beginning.  Say the word bus, where do you hear the /s/?  Answer: at the end  Ask where do you hear the /a/ in apple, in cat?  where do you hear the /r/ in hair? in rabbit? in carrot?  Be sure to just give the sound and not the letter name.

Our Math unit will be Sorting and Classifying.  We will be sorting object by color, shape and size.  We will learn how to sort by more than one attribute.  We will classify things that go together and identify what does not belong in the identified group.  Ex. chair, fork, sofa, table.  Ask what things all belong in the same group and why?  What does not belong and why?

Our Science lessons take place in the science lab with Mrs. Heath as well as in the classroom.  We will discuss why we have fire drills and tornado drills at school and talk about what to do in an emergency.  Our science unit will continue with Our 5 Senses.  We will concentrate on each sense and learn how each one helps us learn about our environment.

Our Social Studies unit will be "All About Me", the most important topic to any 5 year old.  We will learn about our school, the people who work here and what their jobs are.  We will learn that everyone's job is very important and it takes lots of people to make our school work for us.

We will be alternating Science and Social studies with Character Counts and Wise Skills.  With the last two areas listed, we will be concentrating on responsibility and setting personal goals for ourselves.
