In Reading, we will work in Theme 2, "Families" and begin Theme 3 "Friends at School".  Books for this theme and the next are: "Bear's Busy Family" by Stella Blackstone, "What Will Mommy Do When I am at School?" by Delores Johnson, Bee - bim - Bop!", by Linda Sue Park, and "Up, Up, Up! It's Apple-Picking Time by Jody Fickes Shapiro, "The Little School Bus" by Carol Ruth, "I Love School!" by Philemon Sturges, "Jessica" by Kevin Henkes and "Sparky and Eddie: The First Day of School by Tony Johnston.  The letters to be introduced at the end of the month are  Dd, Ii, Gg, and Ff.  The  new words will be: to, like, he, come, here, and this. There is only one new letter being emphasized so that children can build words with the letters they have already learned.  At this time the children should recognize name and sound of Ss, Mm, Tt, Rr, Nn, Pp, Aa, Cc.  They should now be able to blend what they know and build new words, some of which are:  Sam, Pam, ram, am, at, sat, mat, rat, Nat, pat, cat, map, cap, tap, rap, nap.  Segmenting or taking apart words is still being focused on along with the following skills:  identifying the beginning, middle, and end of the story, naming the characters in the story, and the setting of the story, and recognizing words that rhyme.  Writing focus will be on writing the sounds that you hear to create three letter words.  If you don't know how to spell the word you want, try to just get the beginning sound and possibly the end.

We are still working on our pattern unit in Math.  We are building patterns with cubes, chains, double sided discs, beads, words, and other objects.  We are making AB, ABB, AAB and ABC patterns.  We are making our own, copying others and learning how to reconstruct a given pattern with other things.  An example would be an AB pattern of colored circles red,  blue, red, blue, red, blue, now reconstruct the same pattern with money.......penny, nickel, penny, nickel, penny, nickel.  We will be observing the pattern that is created when counting by 10s, 5s and 2s. The chapter test will be in the middle of the month and the next chapter will be "Number Recognition and Counting"

Science   Science in the classroom is still centered around our 5 Senses.  We will be looking through magnifying glasses, and kaleidoscopes.  We will learn other ways to tell about objects if you can not see them.  We will identify lots of different sounds and classify them by good sounds/bad sounds.  We will smell different things and try to guess what they are.  We discussed our favorite way to eat apples and made a graph that shows our most favorite and least favorite.  Apple Pie was the winning way.  We will differentiate between things that feel soft, rough, wet, dry, smooth, hot, cold, and bumpy.  At the end of the 5 Senses unit near the end of the month we will have a big popcorn party and use all 5 of our senses, seeing, hearing, smelling, touching and tasting.

Social Studies for the month will revolve around fire prevention   The month of October is fire safety month.  We will talk about the hard work of the fireman, how to report an emergency and the Do's and Don'ts concerning fire safety.  We will also learn about Christopher Columbus.  We will have a character counts program and hopefully meet Elmer the Elk.  October is also drug awareness month and we will concentrate on "Just Say No to Drugs!"  Our school has become involved in a new behavior system that gives students paw prints for making good choices.  The paw prints can then be turned in for rewards.  The first school-wide reward is a movie and a treat.  Three panther paws are needed for the movie and two for the treat to be earned by October 23.  Children can earn paw prints anywhere in the school for making good choices.
