August 12,13,14,15               Pre-School Days/Teachers Only

August 18 Student's First Day       Welcome All!

In Reading, we will be working on Theme 1,  All About Me. The first letters and corresponding sounds will be Mm, Ss, Rr, Tt, and Aa.  Words to be introduced are I, a, see and me. The big book stories included in this theme are "From Head To Toe" by Eric Carle and "You And Me" by Giovanni Manna.  Suggested library book readings include "Something Special" by David McPhail and "Kelly in the Mirror" by Martha M. Vertreace.  For fun, I will be reading "The Twelve Days of Kindergarten" by Deborah Rose,  "Mr. Ouchy's First Day" by B.G. Jennessy and "Mrs. Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten" by Joseph Slate.

Chapter 1 in Math begins with Sorting and Classifying.  This chapter deals with positional concepts such as in, out, top, middle, bottom, above, below, over, under, left and right.  Children will need to classify and sort objects by kind, size, color and shape.  We will also make and interpret a concrete graph.  Problem solving skills will also be introduced with identifying which things belong in a group as which as which item does not belong in a group and tell why.

Our first Science unit is centered all around the 5 senses.  We will concentrate on one sense at a time and learn all about the world around us using our senses.  It is a fun unit that the children have fun with.  This unit will last through the first grading period.  The standards included in this unit are:  Collaborate with a partner to collect information, Make observations of the natural world and know that they are descriptors collected using the five senses, Keep records as appropriate - such as pictorial records - of investigations conducted, observe and create a visual representation of an object which includes its major features and recognize that learning can come from careful observation.

Social Studies will be alternated with Science and the first unit will not be introduced until September.
